Laid Back Breastfeeding in Pictures (and a Giveaway)

I have previously posted about Dr. Colson's Biological Nurturing: the Laid Back Breastfeeding Position and I finally have some pictures to share with you.  Please check out my previous post about the Laid Back Breastfeeding position here.  The main difference between this position and a standard breastfeeding position is that you use your body to support the baby.  Instead of supporting the baby with your arms, and therefore requiring modern-day breastfeeding pillows, you simply lean back slightly and support the baby with your body.  The baby can be in many different positions as long she is lying down on you.  Most women enjoy placing their babies in a parallel position to their own body but do whatever works for you! In this position, babies tend to latch on comfortably with a wide gape and mothers find it very relaxing and perfect for cuddling.

In honor of World Breastfeeding Week 2010 and the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, Ikea is offering one of my readers an Ikea Poang chair and matching footrest.  Women love this chair as a nursing chair because it is inexpensive, has a matching footrest, and can be stylishly moved from the nursery to the living room.  It is my personal favorite because it is slightly reclining- perfect for the laid back position.

To enter, please leave a comment below including your thoughts on your breastfeeding experience, your prenatal breastfeeding thoughts, breastfeeding positions, or breastfeeding chairs.  Extra entries if you tweet about this giveaway  (include @BeyondPrenatals in your tweet).  I'll be in touch about your choice of color for the chair and footrest.  Good luck.

Updated: Congratulations to Julie!!  Julie- check your e-mail for directions about what to do next.

  2. I stopped using a bfing pillow early on and chose the laid back or arm supporting positions. Love the way this chair would work for that as well with my next nursling due in October!

  3. I breastfed my first baby this way. I got a wedge pillow and put it in my bed and reclined on it and nursed my baby all night long. (or so it seemed)He just slept on me all night.

  4. I had a lot of trouble breastfeeding with the more standard pillow-supported positions. I think the laid back position sounds great and could very likely help support a breastfeeding relationship between me and my next child. Great job on thinking of the raffle!

  5. I breastfed my first for 15 months and I hope to breastfeed my next for just as long. It was easy for us and was something I would not change. I used my boppy at least 5 times a day for the entire 15 months...seriously it was a lifesaver.

  6. When I breastfed my first baby, I didn't have any kind of breastfeeding pillows. I mostly leaned against my headboard. All these positions posted look really comfortable! I would love to win this chair and maybe I can breastfeed my next baby longer.

  11. fabulous nursing experience with my daughter for just over 2 years...our favourite was in the sling as it allowed me to be in whatever position was most comfortable. I was able to read, knit, grocery shop, or just sit and enjoy our precious time together. These chairs are fabulous nursing chairs...my homeopath had one that I used in her office once and adored it! Will be looking at one for this coming babe!
